5. I am having my beard lazored for shape, therefore I will on need to simply trim what is left without the need to do any shaping. I usually trim it all over at the same length (3.5mm) – I currently use the Phillips style dual ended body groomer but find it leaves longer patches in some of the harder to get to places where my neck meets under my face.
   Do you have any good suggestions for that I should get? I am not worried on price, corded etc… I simply want a nice even finish across all of my beard for neatness and uniformity.

   • Hi Alex,

     Totally understand, yes the Philips dual ended body groomer (trimmer end) might not be the best choice for “longer” hairs.

     We really like the Remington MB4045B The Beardsman for beard/stubble maintenance.

     Also, don’t forget that even though you are maintaining stubble, a beard grooming kit might help i.e. beard oil, conditioner and a brush can keep your stubble looking great.

6. Hi, is there a trimmer you recommend that doesn’t need any comb attachments for cuts of say .5 to 10mms? They tend to get misplaced and I just want a simple dial on a shaver without any attachments needed. Thanks for any help

    • Hey Alex,

      Looking at the Remington WETech pg6255, not sure the people answering the questions are clueless, guess they are trying to be helpful, but they are probably answering off a script.

      The trimmer head is stainless steel and self-sharpening, so its unlikely it will need replacing “that often” if it is cared for/cleaned and oiled every so often – once again at a guestimate you could probably get away with not replacing it for at least a couple of years, most likely more. What you will find is that it will just stop cutting as effectively as it gets older/blunter – and you will know it definitely needs replacing when you feel it pulling hairs rather than trimming them. This will definitely vary from person to person based on their hair type/usage etc, but probably more importantly the persons actual awareness of the pulling/snagging, and how many passes they used to take to trim a certain area as it gets duller. Some people just keep using them even when it keeps taking multiple passes and a bit of snagging, because they cannot be bothered etc, and in the scheme of things they are still getting a decent trim.

      You will find it is the body shaver attachment that needs replacing more regularly on the pg6255 model.

      That looks like a pretty cool beard styler from Panasonic, just be aware it is more of a beard styler than body trimmer (but you could certainly trim body hair with it if that is your goal).

      I think there are better beard trimmers out there such as the ones listed on our page below.

    • Hi Trent,

      Thanks for the question. Effectively all trimmers, and especially all the trimmers listed on the page above, can be utilized without their beard guard and will trim to about 0.5mm. Please see our bullet point in the blue box’s “Cuts without guard”.

      Having said that the number 4 on our list, the Philips Norelco QP2520/70 OneBlade, is specifically designed to leave a five o’clock shadow – and is a great product. It also trims slightly closer than the other trimmers, to about 0.4mm (but at those lengths, it is very hard to tell the difference). The downside of this product is that you will need to buy replacement blades every 4 months or so (with the other trimmers you still need to clean and oil every so often so that is something to consider as well).

      If the OneBlade does not interest you then all the other trimmers on our list can create the five o’clock shadow, so this would mean you just have to find a trimmer that meets your other requirements such as price, battery or corded operation, brand etc and go from there.

    Just want to understand better: I would need an electric razor mostly for keeping that 3-day beard look and once every two weeks to shave it as short as possible (so then I can use a cheap Gilette to have that fresh completely shaved look)

      Thanks for the question. Any of the beard trimmers on our list would meet your requirements (if I understand correctly you will use a blade every 2 weeks to shave fully, so you are not after a combined electric beard trimmer and shaver option).

    • Hey John,

      Thanks for your question. It seems like the Wahl 9884-312 zero overlap trim & shave model is specific to Australia/Asia. We have not tested that specific model, but it has a few differences to the Wahl 9818 stainless steel.

      The Wahl 9818 has a variety of blades (Stainless steel T-Blade, detail shaver, detail trimmer, ear/nose/eyebrows) while the Wahl 9884-312 comes with the single T-Blade (zero overlap) and then a dual foil shaver.

      Keeping in mind we haven’t touched that specific model and can only look at the pictures, but drawing on our experience, we would say it looks like a pretty great product.

      The only reservation we would have is that the dual foil shaver, does not seem to have a long hair trimmer in between the foils? So if you really want to shave close you might find that some of the longer hairs could be missed (if you have a look at the photo of the foil shaver on the Philips Style Shaver QS6141/33 Dual for example you will see the long hair trimmer between the foils). If you trim with the trimmer first and then use the dual foil shaver this would probably not be too much of a problem, but if you were just expecting to shave without using the trimming, performance might be a bit average.

      In terms of quality and trimming short without the guards (zero overlap baldes) etc it should be amazing. Just think about how you were expecting to use the shaver.

16. I’m looking for a ‘jack of all trades’ beard trimmer and shaver.
    This is will probably be my fourth or fifth trimmer over the years, so I know what I’m looking for, I just need some help finding it. My beard starts at .5m by the ears up to around 2cm on the chin, so it needs to be good at fading. What I have found hard to find though, is a trimmer that is also very good at shaving for the neckline and cheeks.
    Ideally, it would also have a two pin plug, so that it it does not have to leave the bathroom for charging overnight.
    I have not seen any websites with filters for all of these things, which makes it very hard to find one that ticks all the boxes, so any help would be much appreciated.

      Usually with shaver and trimmer combination products the shave is not amazing, but with this product you have the dual foil shaver head (with long hair trimmer set between the foils), which means it shaves incredibly fast and smooth. It will not shave 2-3 days of growth, but you simply have to trim to 0.5mm with the trimmer head and then shave and you get great results.

      Yes, for the Norelco OneBlade it is not as much of an issue (the OneBlade is a focused product for stubble so does not require as much “power”), but for the Panasonic ER-GB370K it seems they were just trying to keep the cost down. Either way, the OneBlade and Panasonic that we bought for testing are still going strong after 12 months so I would not consider it a complete dealbreaker.

      Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600 – older model of the Wahl 9818, cheaper not as durable.

19. Hi. Thanks for the reviews. I am looking for a face shaver that can work for me when I travel to Africa. I have been using the Andis T-trimmer. My problem is that it makes a Lot of noise when connected to the travel adaptor/step down transformer. Is there any model that works best with the transformer (less noise)and leaves a close shave?

      Please start by reading our guides below.

      I am not sure if this is just for use while you travel or for daily use. If it is just for travel then you can focus more on the shavers in the first list, if it is for daily use then focus more on the shavers in the second list. Depending on budget etc, a good compromise which will be relatively easy to travel with, and will perform at a high level is the Braun Series 7. Good luck with your choice.

21. Do you have any info on the Andis Slimline Pro Li T-blade Trimmer? I have a short beard and just want something to keep that stubble short lookin beard. The barbers at my barber shop use this brand/trimmer (Andis) however, the reviews on Amazon are not the greatest.

      Sorry, but no one in our team has tried the Andis Slimline Pro Li T-blade Trimmer. The negative reviews on Amazon (Amazon link -> http://geni.us/andisslimlineprolit ) mainly refer to quality issues around the battery – about 13% of the 500 reviews are negative. It is very tricky to comment on the quality without trying the model, but with any electric product, there are going to be items that fail (especially with cordless products)… based on our experience this number of negative reviews is probably quite reasonable (within the expected range based on reading a few of the reviews). Typically, G+S have found that Andis makes some great trimmers.

      One of the reasons we listed the Wahl as our number 1 choice is due to its 5-year warranty – and that fact that they will work hard to honor it if anything goes wrong. On that note, the Wahl 9818 does everything the Andis Slimline Pro will do (and more) and is around the same price (once again with that 5-year warranty)…so maybe it is worth considering?

      Thanks for the great question. What you want to look for are “balding clippers”.

      The Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer can be zero-gaped to trim extremely close (0.2 mm) without the guard.

      Alternatively, what you effectively want is a trimmer that can be fitted with blades that can be zero-gapped, or of the size specifications:
      #000000 – 1/150″ – 0.1mm
      #00000 – 1/125″ – 0.2mm
      #000 – 1/50″ – 0.3mm
      etc.

    I actually use a stubble / short beard and I sometimes I shave it on the lower part of my neck.

    Is your answear still the same? Is there a big difference between the OneBlade and the Norelco 9100 at 0.4mm?
    I was thinking about using the Norelco at around 3mm for beard and mustache and at 0.4mm for the lower part of my neck

27. I maintain a medium sized beard but I usually cut it with a razor under the neck, however my skin is really sensitive and I get razor bumps.

    Should I buy

    or
    Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41)

    Does the 9100 cuts the hair short enough under the neck?
    I prefer the 9100 model but I’m affraid it does not trim close enough

      If you maintain a medium length beard on your face and want to trim really short around your neck G+S thinks the Philips Norelco 9100 would be a good option for you. The OneBlade would also help you achieve similar results, but the BT9285/41 probably has the edge when it comes to maintaining a medium length beard, keeping nice lines, and less switching out of beard guards etc.

      The BT9285/41 (and the OneBlade) will cut to about 0.4mm, and will do so without minimal impact on your skin, and will help you avoid razor bumps. At 0.4mm you will effectively have very short stubble under the neck, but will most likely look quite natural as you have the beard on your face.

      Thanks for contacting us. We have not tested the Philips model BT7225/49 (only the Phillips 7200 BT7215/49), but comparing the specifications online it looks like they are exactly the same, just that the BT7225/49 comes with a travel pouch.

      As mentioned in our answer to Jaren (above) the G+S test team has never had any issues with the tines on the guards. The 5-year warranty should provide you some comfort as well.

30. Excellent review. Now I am stuck between Panasonic ER-GB80 or Philips Norelco 9285.
    But what about new Panasonic ER-GD60 and ER-SC60?
    Will be used for shorter beard. I don’t need laser, but maintenance free is plus. Less comb product is preferred. Washable is not that important. I see GB80 is getting better reviews. But new products are not tested much yet.
    What would be your recommendation? Thanks.

      We have not tried the Panasonic ER-SC60 yet, it looks like it was “just” released (August 2017) – but it seems to be marketed specifically as a Hair Clipper more than a beard trimmer, and it also seems to be quite highly priced (US$179.99)? If you were interested in their latest offerings you might want to check out the ER-SB40-K Beard, Mustache and Hair Trimmer (it is also quite highly priced- I guess due to it being a new model, which is waterproof and with the digital display) – the cutting blade, however, is better suited for a beard than the ER-SC60.

      I would personally avoid the Panasonic ER-GD60 until there is more information available – we have not tried this model, but have found that designs that “cut to the side” are generally disappointing. G+S might take a further look at this product later in the year.

      G+S really like both the Panasonic ER-GB80 and the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100/9285 – and for ease of maintenance, use, and performance etc. both would serve you very well. We just wish the ER-GB80 had a Lithium-Ion battery, rather than the nickel-metal-hydride battery, (but the ER-GB80 can be used corded/while plugged in so this is probably more of Groom+Style’s preference rather than a dealbreaker for most people) – and the BT9285 has become hard to find in the USA. If you won’t use the laser, then save yourself some money and go for the ER-GB80.

    About Philips 9100 (Model BT9285/41), I can see that you wrote “Note, our previous top choice – this cool trimmer does not seem to be easy to find any more.”

    Is it because of the availability that it’s not longer the first choice, or is Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus actually a better trimmer?

    I already have the Philips 9100, but it just stopped working now after 3,5 years. I think it was very good, but this is the only one I have tried ever. The product is still available here in Norway, and I’m considering to buy the same one again, but I saw that the Wahl trimmer won your rating. It sounds like a good one, but is it high maintenance when it comes to cleaning since it’s not waterproof? Because I’m a bit lazy when it comes to that. My beard is also a bit thicker and richer than my buddies, is it good for thick beard?

    Which one yould you recommend? The price doesn’t matter, as both are priced around £90 in Norway.

      G+S really do like the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100, and the availability issues were the main reason we removed it from the top position – many readers were complaining that it was too hard to find. Having said that the Wahl 9818 is incredibly powerful and high quality with that 5-year warranty. It would have no trouble with a thick (or even very thick beard) – but some people do not like the multiple attachments and the fact that is is not waterproof (it is tricky to get everything). Whether or not you think having to brush off the cutting head and the combs after use (and oiling it every now and again) is “high maintenance” compared to rinsing it under the tap, only you can decide.

      If the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 is available still in Norway and it treated you well, you like the convenience of the adjustable comb, the laser, and the fact that it is washable – then it might be good to stick with what you know?

      Thanks for the great question. They are effectively the same base unit with the same performance specifications, they just come with different attachments. The (Philips 5100) BT5210/42 is marketed as a Beard and Head Hair Trimmer, while the (Philips 5100) BT5215/41 is sold as a Beard, Head Hair Plus Body Trimmer. So the only real difference between the BT5210/42 and BT5215/41 is that the BT5215/41 comes with a body comb attachment.

Starting with the easy question, the key difference between the Panasonic ER-GB80-S and Panasonic ER-GB70 is that the ER-GB80-S comes with an additional 1.5mm body comb/trimmer attachment (both the GB80 and GB70 come with 2 beard combs of lengths 1-10mm and 11-20mm).

      In terms of which model to go for between the Wahl 9818 and the Panasonic ER-GB80/GB70, G+S prefer the Wahl 9818 for its extended warranty, superior battery (Lithium-ion battery vs Ni-MH battery), additional blades/nose trimmer options. The 5-year warranties should give you some peace of mind, and they will both handle thick stubble, without tugging or pulling hairs (and they trim with or with the guard combs). Think about how your son will be using the trimmer…if he wants a more complete grooming set (i.e. will find the nose trimmer and detail shaver useful) go for the Wahl…if he will just be trimming beard/head/body hair (and would like a bit more convenience) then the Philips would be a great choice.

      So comparing the Braun BT5050 vs. the Philips Norelco Series 5100 – BT5210

      The Braun BT5050 (link to the product on Amazon http://geni.us/braunbt5050) is very similar to the Philips BT5210 in a lot of ways. They are both washable under a tap, have high-quality blades, can be used cordlessly and corded, and are made by great companies.

      The minor differences are: the Braun BT5050 has a larger cutting range (25 lengths from 1mm to 20mm with 0.5mm increments), while the Philips BT5210 can trim stubble a bit closer (0.4mm) and only trims to 13mm, but the increments are much smaller at 0.2mm (which we really like).

      The main reasons we like the Philips BT5210 better than the Braun BT5050 are the 5-year warranty provided by Philips (you do need to register the product), along with a 45-day money back guarantee if you are not fully satisfied. Also, we tend to prefer products which use Lithium Ion batteries like the Philips BT5210 – the Braun has a Ni-MH (Nickel-Metal Hydride), which typically have less power, take longer to charge and do not last as long.       Thanks for the question. It looks like Philips have created a model specifically for the Indian market with the BT7215/49. The key difference between the Philips Vacuum Beard Trimmer BT7206/15 and Philips Norelco BT7215/49 is that the BT7206/15 comes with the Precision trimmer & 2 combs to help trim the harder to reach areas (upper lip etc.).

      The Philips Norelco BT7215/49 is dual voltage (compatible with all worldwide voltages), but it seems like the seller on amazon.in is shipping from the US, so you might want to check with the seller if you will need a plug adapter for that model. Or it might just be more cost effective and easier to buy the BT7206/15 model.

41. Hi I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. I just have a few questions. I have sensitive acne prone skin and have struggled with 5 blade razors, I have recently switched to a top of the line electric shaver and and hoping for better results.

    Another option I am looking at is buying a beard trimmer as I have heard this is a good alternative for acne prone skin. I just need to find one that gives me the absolute least mount of stubble (preferable > 1m) and that also won’t irritate my skin. Do you have any recommnedations?

      Thanks for the question. We have not tested the Moser Li+Pro but it looks like it will work well as a general hair cutting device i.e. it will cut both head hair and beard hair. Their are devices (with specialised features) that focus on trimming head hair (for example the Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro which has a rotating head to help shave the back of the head, and comes with a foil attachment to shave closer) or trimming beards (Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 with the laser and the Philips Norelco BT7215/49 with the vacuum) – but some are more generalised devices and can do both.

      The combination of quiet, affordable and compact is a tricky one when it comes to beard trimmers. We can suggest models that tick some of the boxes, but you will have to decide which features are most important – and maybe opt for a quieter more expensive model over a more compact model etc.

      You mention quietness first… Andis make some brilliant, high quality, quiet trimmers, but you will pay a bit more and we are not sure if 5.5 inches in length is considered compact enough for you. There are 2 main Andis models that run very cool and quiet, that you might want to consider.

      Yes, I still think the Remington MB4045B is the way to go. The medium comb will allow you to trim you beard from 1.5mm to 18mm (then you also have the stubble comb or XL comb if you need shorter or longer lengths). You can use the Remington MB4045B without the combs to help with detailing/contouring if you need (to 0.7mm). It is not a corded option but it has a high quality lithium ion battery which should serve you well.

      I certainly think that using beard wax would be valuable in taming/styling/conditioning your beard hairs.

    Thank you for the extrememly helpful article. May I request your help with my specific problem?

    When I trim my beard using my current trimmer, (Andis T-outliner) I end up with beard hair which kind of ‘stand’ on the skin surface. I think this is because they are not long enough to ‘fall down’, and they are not short enough to make the ‘standing’ of the hair not apparent.

    The biggest attachment comb of the Andis T-Outliner is 3/8 inches (9.5mm). Attachment combs bigger than this are not available (they only have four comb lengths: 1/16″, 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″).

    Therefore, I am looking to buy a new trimmer which can help me grow my beard a bit longer – to get over the hair standing issue – yet keep it well groomed. I will have to experiment with the beard length, but would like to have the optionality to grow it close to 20mm, if necessary.

    Effectively, the twin goals I am trying to acheive are: (1) Grow my beard a bit longer, (2) Keep the beard well groomed and even in length.

    Which trimmer would you recommend I buy?

    Also, is their a beard cream/moisturiser that you recommend?

      I would suggest you look at the Remington MB4045B. It comes with three combs – stubble comb (which can trim from 1mm to 5mm in 0.5mm increments), a medium comb (1.5mm to 18mm) and an XL comb (20mm to 35mm). With this range of options you should find a length that you can work with.

      In terms of beard wax, please check out our review linked below. The beard wax will not only help with moisturising and shaping, but will probably help a bit with your beard hair standing on the skin surface.

      Are you interested in maintaining a stubble look, or are you looking for a outliner that can create nice lines for your beard etc?

      You have a few main options.

      The Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41) will trim as close as 0.4mm.

      The Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer can trim as close as about 0.1mm without the guard -> it can also be zero gapped, which means you can adjust the blades (this takes a screw driver and a bit of fiddling – feel free to google it) to create an even closer trim (this is typically done by barbers to create really nice lines, but it also increases the chance of catching/cutting skin, so be careful if you think about doing this).

    I also apologize for not being more clear, but I have a dedicated clippers for cutting my hair (Wahl Magic Clip).

    After many years, I’ve grown the beard back, so I was looking for a second machine to handle two other things: (1) beard trimming/grooming and detail edging (things like the jaw line, under the nose & around the lips), and, since the clippers blade is wider, (2) also use this new machine w/ a smaller blade width to do more precise detail work on hair cuts (back of neck edge line, cleanup below the neck line, & cleanup behind the ear lobes).

    With these clarifications, would the Remington and/or the Wahl MAG be back in play along w/ the Norelco you suggested?

    No corded mode on the Remington isn’t a deal breaker (just a nice backup if the battery fails), and I am curious if you think that the titanium coated blade on the MB4045A version is worthwhile? Regarding the Wahl MAG, do you now see the no zero gap as a real problem for cleaning up the back of my neck during hair cuts (I currently get by w/ the bigger clippers)?

    I really appreciate your extra effort on this and am looking forward what you think my best option is after you’ve seen the clarifications.

      Based on the clarifications.

      You might want something a bit more specialised than the Norelco – as you don’t need the hair clipper options etc. Although, it does have the easy 18 adjustments (1mm-18mm) and the precision trimmer for fine lines and contouring, and a foil shaver to get a closer finish. You can trim down and then get the foil shaver to finish of to a smooth finish (although it is tricky to get a straight line with a foil shaver).

      For the Remington MB4045 I would say the titanium coated blade is definitely worth the extra $10 investment. So going for the MB4045A with the titanium coated blade (I will update the article to reflect this fact) will add to the durability (harder wearing & extra strength) and therefore a sharper cut for longer. The Remington MB4045B will cut to about .7mm without the guard.

      Based on your updated requirements I would probably lean towards the Wahl Professional Sterling Mag. Looking again at the blade attachment (model blade 2111) it looks like to you can cut to 0.4mm (sorry about the confusion), which should be enough to create some very sharp lines.

      I guess it will come down to the compromise of switching between 2 guard combs on the Wahl, vs the flexibility of the length dial on the Remington. And then the length of the outline you want to be able to achieve without the combs attached. So I think you want more of a beard outliner trimmer (Wahl Mag) that can be used as a beard trimmer, than a beard trimmer (Remington MB4045) that can be used as an outliner.

    Thanks much for your thorough reviews! After researching, I’m torn between the Wahl Sterling MAG trimmer (not listed in your review) and the Remington MB4045B, and I’d like to get your thoughts on which of these would be better for my situation (or if something else is the right fit).

    I have a multi-purpose use in mind for the trimmer. One is that I keep my hair quite tight since mother nature has taken its course (#1 up the sides & back and blending into #2 on top) and want a tool that can handle the detail around the edges (back of neck & sides by the ears) more cleanly/precisely than clippers as well as the occasional quick, in between cleanup. The other is that I’m looking for a strong beard trimmer/edge detailer for a shorter beard (typically in the 3mm to 6mm range & maybe the occasional stubble look).

    The main issue is that my hair and beard texture are quite coarse and there is no real “grain” to it (both hair & beard don’t lay in consistent directions at all), so I’m looking for something that can handle cutting this type of hair … and do it evenly. This has driven me to pro type clippers as the few home types that I’ve tried just don’t cut it (pardon the pun!) … I’ve never owned a detail trimmer before.

    Other reviews of the MAG have been really good as far as cutting tough hair, so I’m curious if you think the 4 combs give it enough adjustability for my beard. The adjustability of either MB40455 (A or B) w/o a lot of change out pieces sounds really good as well, so I’m curious if the blades & motor can handle my coarse/tough hair type.

    Also, if Remington is the choice, would the titanium coated blades of the Copper version (MB4055A) provide an even better cut than the MB4045B? Cost aside, I assume everything else is about the same as the “B” version (i.e. – the same 19 adjustments on the zoom wheel & fewer attachments, but I don’t see these details called out clearly on the Remington web site)?

    My preference is a cordless/corded option (Ion battery). Can the Remington models be operated either cordless or corded (or do they only function as a cordless)?

    I’d really appreciate your insights, thoughts and guidance!

      Thanks for the great question – this was a fun/challenging one. To summarise your key requirements what I focused on was:
      1) Powerful trimmer / multigroom device that can be used corded or in cordless mode
      2) Multiple length settings in one/as few comb guards as possible
      3) Skin friendly detailed trimmer option for finishing work

      Unfortunately, the Remington MB4045 is more focused as a face/beard trimmer, so it might not be exactly what you are looking for, if you want to use it as a hair clipper as well. In addition it cannot be used in corded mode.

      The Wahl Professional Sterling Mag is a great high quality trimmer that will certainly have enough power to meet your needs (in both corded and cordless mode). However, it only comes with 4 multiple interchangeable guards, so you are limited in the lengths you can achieve and there will be a lot of guard comb changes required to meet your needs. The guard length are:
      S-1 – 1/8 Inch, 3.18mm
      S-2 – 1/4 Inch, 6.3mm
      S-3 – 3/8 Inch, 9.5mm
      S-4 – 1/2 Inch, 12.7 mm
      On the plus side the Wahl Sterling Mag is incredibly quite, the battery life is outstanding, it runs very cool, and is easy on the skin.
      The other noticeable downside is that you cannot zero gap these trimmers, so they will not trim to about 0.4mm.

      There is another class of trimmer that you might want to consider called Multigroomers. One of the great versions is the Norelco Multigroom 5100 model number QG3364. This trimmer offers corded and cordless use, a high performing lithium ion battery and turbo boost for thick hair. It comes with a nose trimmer, simple foil shaver, detailed trimmer (to define sharp lines) and 18 adjustable lengths from 1mm to 18mm (3 guards are included, hair clipping comb, beard comb and stubble comb). It also has self sharpening blades made from finely ground chromium steel for long-lasting performance and rounded blade tips so they are friendly on the skin. It is probably not as “professional” a model as the Wahl Mag, but it probably more closely meets your requirements for a cheaper price.

      Very sorry for the confusion, I got a bit excited about trying to give you some additional options, and while looking into another Philips model (see below) did not write down my thoughts clearly -> the Philips Norelco 9100 does only trim to 7mm (corrected now as well in the comment above to avoid confusing anyone else).

      In fact I spoke to our beard trimmer contacts and they suggested you look into the Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer 5100 – as it should fit all of your requirements.     I read your reviews and still can’t decide which one to pick.

    I will be traveling for the next few months, so these are the things I’m looking for in a trimmer:
    – washable / water resistant
    – 12 mm length support
    – 0 length support – maybe using it without a comb?
    – doesn’t take long to charge
    – doesn’t take much space and not too heavy

    I was considering number 4 on the list – tge Remington trimmer, but there are two problems:
    – The review says that I may cut myself with the blades. Does that mean that I can’t use it for a 0 length trim for my neck? (Without the comb)

    – It is heavy. 1.5 punds is a lot to carry around on my back everywhere.. Although it says that the newer model is the heavy one, Is the older model less heavy?

    What would you recommend me to buy?

    • Hi L,

      I think you could safely choose either the Philips Norelco 9100 or the Remington MB4045B trimmers and they would both serve you well. The Remington MB4040/MB4045B will trim to 12mm and the Philips Norelco 9100 will trim to 7mm, and the weights and product dimensions are roughly equal (MB4045B weight corrected to 1.15 pounds, with the MB4040 being around the same weight). You will have to be more cautious with the MB4045B around water than with the Philips Norelco 9100.

      Effectively, with any trimmer where you do not use the beard guard you need to be careful to not nick yourself – this is where you are trimming “larger” areas to get the stubble look, rather than just cleaning up the edges/lines of your beard/styling. Although, the tips on the Philips Norelco are probably slightly more forgiving than the Remingtons. If you are going to use the trimmers without the guards to create the stubble look, then trim to the lowest setting possible with the guard on (.4mm for the Philips Norelco and 1mm for the Remington), then stretch the skin to ensure it does not get caught (use the other hand and lengthen your neck etc.), and finally ensure you do not apply much pressure (let the trimmer do the work).

59. What is your opinion of the bevel trimmer? It seems expensive but has won awards and such. My husband has a long rough beard and likes to maintain that but also likes to change and do a stubble and maintain that. I don’t want a ton of attachments and want the battery to last a long time. However, from talking to our Barber contacts the performance is on par with the Andis T-Outliner – and for the approximately $200 price we would have expected slightly more. There are some key differences between the Bevel Trimmer and the Andix T-Outliner; and if you think those features add enough value to your trimming experience that you can ignore the price differential, then go for it.

    Just to note that on Andis website the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer is discontinued. I am looking for something like that that will give me a good trim because I do want a great quality one.       Thanks for raising this question – as this potential Con is missing from the information in the article above. With the Philips Norelco Beard trimmer Series 7200 (Vacuum trimmer model BT7215/49) the main trimmer guard ( Norelco Comb 1: Beard & Stubble attachment), like on most trimmers, is plastic. The guard is placed “on top” of the trimmer and snaps in place via two plastic tabs or tines at the end of the guard. The main guard is then removed by depressing 2 additional tabs to empty the vacuum chamber.

      The G+S team have used the Philips Norelco BT7215 Trimmer quite consistently for the last year and have not had any issues with the guard. Looking at some comments on amazon is does appear however that the tines/plastic tabs on the guards have broken for some users. How many breakages there have been or how likely it is that they will break for you is very hard to predict.

      3 additional points.
      1) From what we can tell, even if the tines/plastic tabs did break it would not stop you from actually using the trimmer and the trimmer guard i.e. the guard would stay in place due to the fact that you are pressing the trimmer against your face while using it.
      2) If you are careful taking the guard off and on, and while placing it down (after you have removed it) this will of course reduce the chances of any breakages.
      3) Although not ideal you could always order a replacement part, see link below.

    • Hi Sammy,

      No problem – it is quite common for some men to have trouble trimming their moustache, especially the hairs close to the nose. Before I suggest a trimmer here are a few pointers that might help you get some better results when trimming your moustache and hairs close to the nose.
      1) pull your upper lip down over your jaw and at the same time pull back your lower jaw and open your mouth. This will work to lengthen your upper lip and might help you get better access to those upper lip/moustache hairs?
      2) while doing number 1, the important thing to do (I am sure you are already doing it) is to hold the trimmer “upside down” and work from the bottom of the lip upwards towards the nose
      3) If you need more “room” you can also take the thumb of your spare hand (or thumbs and pointer finger) and push upwards (and to the side) on your nose/nostril

      In terms of the best trimmer for working on the upper lip and moustache you want to focus on trimmers with have a narrow head like the:

    I have been using a Wahl Peanut trimmer for years.
    Issue is the blades get dull fast but most importantly the closest shave is still too long for my beard. I use the S-1 guard but doesn’t create stubble look.

    Thanks for all the great reviews. You must be fed up of receiving the same questions despite the reviews. I’m looking to get a goatee trimmer to replace my current babyliss i stubble which was great but the plastic comb case which controls the length has broken which makes it useless. The other flaw I noticed was that because of the large head, I struggled to trim my moustache especially hairs under my nose. It meant I had to use the blades without the plastic guard so it was never even. So id like to try something different. Here is what I am looking for.

    1) Trim my goatee to between 3mm and 3.5mm. If I can achieve something in between then brilliant but I’m not sure if any of the trimmers will achieve an accuracy of more than 0.5mm at that length. I know many can achieve 0.2mm up to 2mm.
    2) I will not be using it for anything other than goatee trimming so I’m not fussed about loads of attachments and gadgets. I shave with a razor which frankly I find the best way to shape it, so long as the razor is new.
    3) Must be cordless but not bothered if not water proof or washable. The brush does a good job cleaning and don’t shave my goatee in the shower.
    4) id rather not spend any more than £40 sterling as I reckon I can get a decent trimmer for my needs at that price. That puts the Philips laser and norelco with a vacuum at the bottom of the list.

    Top of my list right now is the remington mb4045 which you reviewed and MB320 barba that hasn’t been. I’d appreciate your thoughts and recommendations on what models to consider based on my above criteria.

      Thanks for the question, and sorry for the small delay in replying – there has been a mini Christmas rush.

      Based on your requirements the team would recommend that you lean towards the Remington MB4045. You will be paying about £10 more but you will be closer to meeting your requirements.

      The Remington MB4045 comes with a separate stubble comb which will let you trim your goatee to either 3 or 3.5mm i.e. the Remington MB4045 stubble comb allows you to trim from 1mm to 5mm in 0.5mm increments. Whereas the Remington MB320 Barba will trim to preset lengths of 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4mm, 5.5mm, 7mm etc.

      The other factor we would consider pertinent is that the stubble comb on the MB4045 has a narrower head than the MB320 which will help you trim under your nose easier etc. The Remington MB4045 will allow for cordless use.

      The wahl 9854-600 does contain self sharpening precision blades. Having said that after extended use the blades will eventually require sharpening – the instructions provided with the trimmer provide details of how to keep the blades oiled etc. which will extend the life of the blades. If the blades do get to a point where they require manual sharpening you can either do it yourself (there are youtube videos on how to do this) or you can buy replacement blades.

81. Great info, thanks. I have a couple requirements that are not esaly found in the reviews.
    – goatee ‘sculpting’ is the most common use for a trimmer. I’m not very good so anything that makes managing a goatee easier is top of my list. Typical legnth is pretty short , sorry don’t know legnth.
    – simple. No/few attachments for different lengths or the occasional stubble beard is important.
    – low maintenance is a plus.
    – Multi use…..eyebrows, nose /ear hair, man-scaping would be a bonus.

    #1 and 2 are key, 3 and 4 optional.

      The laser is specifically designed to help keep your goatee symmetrical. There are only 2 attachments (the detail comb and beard comb), and it is easily adjustable all the way from 0.4mm to 7mm. It is easy to clean, charge and maintain.     I want to buy a trimmer and can’t decide which one to be. Fist of all i want to say that my beard and mustage are pretty thick and like to keep my beard around 7-9mm. I was reading multiple articles around but can’t decide what to buy, for the moment looking at Phillips 7200 and 9000 series. First of all i was wondering if the price difference between the 2 products it is worthed (25%) and i like the aspirator from 7200 series.

    If is possible give me an advice. In my country i can find from Phillips the next models: BT7210/15 and BT9290/32 – I don’t know if is any difference between them and the models you’ve tested, but i heard is different because of EU and country of distribution.

      Thanks again for your question. I will focus my answer on the Philips Norelco models you mentioned – they are great trimmers.

      As you pointed out, the Philips Norelco trimmer models the GNS team reviewed were the US models. They match up with the UK models as per below:
      US(BT9285/41) -> UK(BT9290/32)
      US(BT7215/49) -> UK(BT7210/15)
      Differences within the series usually come down to an extra set of combs, or travel pouches, or addition of a digital display etc. while the rest stays the same, motor performance etc.

      If we compare the BT9290 vs. BT7210 key differences are:
      BT9290 is washable, has the laser guide and digital display. Trimmer length 0.4 millimeters to 7 mm
      BT7210 is not washable, does not have the laser guide, does not have the digital display, BUT does have the vacuum. Trimmer length 0.5 millimeters up to 10 mm

      If you maintain your beard between 7-9mm, and you like the vacuum option (and don’t care about the laser or the washable option), then it sounds like the BT7210 is for you!

83. I have been getting the wahl ones and have always had trouble with the trimmers pulling my hair. Is there a trimmer that avoids that?

      Thanks for touching base, which Wahl model/s trimmer do you find is pulling? From our experience a trimmer can pull hair (rather than cut) if some of the conditions listed below are met:
      – it’s a cheap trimmer
      – if it is not fully charged/powered
      – if the blades are dull
      – if it is not oiled properly
      – if they are used in a rush

      If you have been put off the Wahl trimmers, then myself and the team are huge fans of the Philips Norelco BT9285/41?

Just FYI, saying if the Andis is “good enough for your barber, it’s probably good enough for you” in regards to the lack of trimming attachment options is fairly misleading, as most barbers use a clipper-over-comb technique and rarely use the attachments when cutting hair. (Well, the ones who know what they’re doing use that technique….I was in the hair profession for ten years as a colorist, so I know lots about this.) So a professional barber can create all sorts of lengths & looks just using the clipper itself with NO attachments; doing this to yourself in the mirror is NOT recommended, even for a professional. It’s an easy skill to learn but rather difficult to master, which is why a good barber is hard to find.

    This isn’t to say the Andis isn’t extremely high-quality, because it is. It probably has the best “guts” of all the models you reviewed, and if properly cared for, will last a lifetime and then some. But, it’s not for the average guy who needs easy trimming of set lengths of hair anywhere on the face, head, or body.

      I have spoken to the Groom+Style Team, and the consensus is that you would be better off paying a bit more and buying the Remington mb4040. You will be getting a longer lasting product with the mb4040.

93. What is the longest length setting for the trimmers? I don’t want to trim my beard below 1 inch.

      1 inch is probably difficult to achieve with a beard trimmer although most brands claim they can but none of the trimmers have come out truimphs in our tests. In all practical sense, you would need a hair clipper with an 1 inch extension along with a grained comb.

94. The Philips Norelco vacuums have gotten weaker over the years. I had a maroon one for years that did great (T770 or something). It stopped taking a charge. I went out and got whatever model was just before the 4070. I immediately noticed much more mess, with cut hairs on my torso after using it. That was less than 2 years ago, and this morning it stopped working on the “turbo” setting. It shuts off after 1-2 seconds, and it’s fully charged.

    None of the reviews online indicate much satisfaction with the strength of vacuums for any brand, but I think I’m going to try Remington since the Philips Norelco one was so disappointing last time.

      Absolutely! It came up triumphs in all our in-house tests. In our opinion, it still is the best trimmer money can buy (well at-least for now!).
